In 1862,
Ezekiel C. Smith of Quaker Hill, CT, offered to provide to his family
burial plot for the purpose of establishing a cemetery if a properly organized
“association” could be established
to manage the cemetery. Immediately, the Union Cemetery Association of
Waterford was formed.
From its
beginning during the Civil War, the Union Cemetery Association has always been
a voluntary organization of local resident members committed to providing a valuable service to the community
in a time of need. For nearly a century
and a half the cemetery has been beautifully maintained.
In order for this level of care to continue,
it is essential that the Association receive continued community support to
provide for the perpetual care and maintenance of the historic graves and grounds.
Since the
purchase of 2-1/2 acres adjacent to the Union Cemetery in 1999, the Association
has worked to develop the new property.
To date, the land has been cleared, lawn has been planted, a new access
entrance from Lathrop Rd. and gravel roadways have been added, new plots have
been surveyed and laid out and some landscaping has been done. A beautiful new stone wall has been built
along Lathrop Road. A Cremation Garden
is in the planning stages along with additional burial plots for sale in Quaker Hill CT.
Please
consider giving a donation to help the voluntary organization
maintain the beautiful grounds and monuments at the Union Cemetery in Quaker Hill CT.
